Free Peace are the latest creation from Liverpool music maverick Edgar Jones. On drums is Edgar's nephew Nick Miniski and Stuart Gimblett plays guitar. Edgar decided to call it a day on the seven-piece jazzy r'n'b outfit The Joneses and invent something a lot 'leaner and louder'. He called upon the services of Nick and Stu - two talented young musicians who had previously played together in a Liverpool band The Pedantics. Nick had also done an eighteen month stint in The La's. Their sound is loud and heavy but contains a lot of soul. Led Zeppelin is a definite influence but The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Southern soul sound of New Orleans also form an important part of the mix.
Chew Lips:
Brooklynites might have thought they were gonna have the girl-fronted electro-pop trio thang all to themselves, but tonight is proof that London's response is ready to go – and what a glorious riposte Chew Lips are. The three-piece share the bleeps'n'beats soundscapes of Chairlift and School Of Seven Bells, but instead of being guided by valium vocals, they're frogmarched forward by the incessant, brain-stamping melodies of singer Tigs, managing to look all mischievous and melancholic at once.
Tonight, as her two bandmates engage in a Casio keyboard-off behind her, she's engrossing, pixie-dancing her way round the stage one second, mock-laser shooting the audience the next, and then stopping in her tracks, suddenly looking all Karen O-mournful. Just when you think she might be about to break the emotional barrier, though, she hip-swivels her way through the crowd and finishes the song from atop the bar. More fool us. The songs are similarly contrary; ‘Salt Air' has a thumping, dancefloor-quaking bassline juddering beneath its aching vocal, ‘CLVRI' starts off like a bittersweet PJ Harvey lullaby and quickly slides into a wicked, malevolent chorus whilst set highlight ‘Solo' is the sort of intimate, introspective paean to life slipping away that you suspect'll have everyone singing along by the summer.
Chew Lips will be the ear-seducing, dancefloor-dominating heartbreakers of 2009 – the Brooklynites can get their return flights booked…
Misery Guts:
While many people are stuck for ideas when it comes to doing something different with an acoustic guitar, Misery Guts have pursued their art and created three more unusually characterful songs.
Review of Spiders Single by Steve at the Mag
Last week saw the release of Misery Guts second single Spiders, following on from the critically well received debut Trying To Be The Sun. The track is a brilliant galloping effort that sits somewhere between a Western soundtrack and a speeded up version of The Byrds, it's got a dark underbelly to it that really comes out in the rich vocals. This theme continues on the more folky sounding b-sides with Red, Red Rose and The Devil And The Sea both beautifully sung and simply played, it marks Misery Guts out as a real band to watch out for.
Review of Spiders by Kevin at the Beat Surrender Record Box
It may only be January but it looks like we already have a favourite of 2009 here at Music-News Unsigned. Liverpool-based band Misery Guts are fantastic. With gorgeous melodies, psychedelic undertones and beautiful lyrics this folksy, sixties inspired track is the perfect debut and is bound to get them noticed. Brilliant.

With a name like Misery Guts, you can't really fail, can you?
Great modern folk music this, complete with plinky-plonky mandolin sounds.
It's got all the elements you require in the genre – drama, singability, funkiness, originality, humour, etc, etc, etc. One of the best records I've heard in ages.

Released on "black Monday", which this year falls on the 26th of January, Misery Guts' debut single 'Trying To Be The Sun' is an acoustic treat that harks back to the days of Simon and Garfunkel.
It's all based on a death-row novel and is even accompanied by a stylised cartoon video to help tell the story, but essentially it's a bit of quality "pop with a dark side" that slips a bit of Turin Brakes alongside that Paul Simon acoustic style.
'Hiding At The Front' and 'Let Me On My Way' are spicy b-sides that show us a bit more of what Misery Guts can do. It's a strong debut that should make Liverpool proud.
Reiewed by Steve @ The Mag.
For some strange reason, the fantastically named Liverpudlian outfit, Misery Guts, have decided to commemorate the most miserable day of the year (the last Monday in January, fact fans) by releasing their debut single 'Trying To Be The Sun'. Which could have opened a whole world of pain for them.
But, know what? It's an absolutely fabulous song, all 1968 shimmery Jefferson Airplane. The acoustic psychedelia vibe continues on B-side 'Hiding At The Front', albeit it in moodier style before C-side (eh?) 'Let Me On My Way' strips their acoustic sound right back to basics.
A real treat, I can't recommend this highly enough. It's one of those downloady thingys, out on iTunes on the 26th January. Although, if you're lucky enough to catch one of their live shows, you should be able to get a proper CD copy.

Lunar Youth:
Lunar Youth's songs are glorious celebrations of place.
Over echoing guitars and cascading synths, Simon Berlin's laid back, romantic croon tells of youth cults, forgotten nightclubs, and futuristic dystopias. Influenced by the glamorous aesthetic and sound of Roxy Music and the imagist poetry of Arthur Symons, Lunar Youth play slick, sheen pop rooted in young emotion. Singer and guitarist Berlin is joined by his bearded brother Adam on drums and the famed man about town Peter Davies on bass.

Description:
As you probably know, our planned launch night in October was pulled for reasons outside our control. But we're back on Saturday 28 November, with every reason to make it your best night out of the year. The feeling is the same, only stronger, cos as we said before …
… the time is right for something new in clubland, and here it is – "ENDUP" is a brand new monthly night that has been put together in a way to deliver an alternative to the "Bar vs. Superclub" of Liverpool, tailor-made for people who are looking for a dose of club culture with substance to it.
With the way that frivolous "bar culture” has taken over the music policy of the city we thought it was about time we got back to basics, playing music that actually means something to someone, music driven by diversity, awareness and tolerance ...just like it was in early days of clubbing, before it fractured into all the different styles we have today.
We searched hard to find the right venue, and we think we've found it in The Bad Format Social Club. It's an intimate new space - like the cavern with brick arches - that takes influences from the past and mixes them up with the best ideas and technology of the future. We'll be bringing in our own sound system, and using one of the UK's most experienced decor designers (that's me) to give the place a new look - because we think the more you put into a night the more you get out of it.
So with our Do-it -Yourself attitude "EndUp" is going to bring in something fresh, something that has meaning ... all in an intimate city centre venue. This is a brand new night where the music is the message; spread the word, and who knows where we will all "End Up".
John, Danny, Mike & Craig
Enjoy
